Outdoor Furniture for Gold Coast

The Gold Coast: home to more than half a million people, it’s South East Queensland’s second city, and Australia's most populous non-capital city.

Not so long ago this was just a sleepy little beachside holiday destination. It’s quickly grown to become Australia’s fastest growing large city, and the centre of Queensland film production.

Gold Coast is synonymous with surf, sand and sun. People travel from all over to enjoy the beaches and the weather. With plenty of farmer’s markets, the Darling Downs farming region just to the west, and beachside access to the freshest of fish and seafood, there’s no end of great local produce on offer. All this makes it extremely hard to pass up the chance to enjoy a lovely day outside with a few refreshments and the best of company.

Climate and Seasons

The Bureau of Meteorology places Gold Coast in a subtropical climate zone.

Located barely an hour’s drive south of Brisbane, Gold Coast gets very similar weather; temperatures on average are about 1 degree cooler than Brisbane, and the Gold Coast gets a bit more rain.

Gold Coast gets a mild winter with few rainy days. Temperatures in winter often reach the mid-twenties, and with clear skies all day most days, this can be a great time of year to enjoy time outside. While those in more southern Australian cities gather by the fireplace, Gold Coast residents can still enjoy a refreshing backyard beverage and a barbecue.

Average temperatures during summer reach the high twenties. On days like this, it’s nice to enjoy the outdoors; remember to stay sun smart! On really hot days though it can to the high 30s – you will probably want to avoid the mid-afternoon when entertaining outdoors on the very hottest days. The summer is a rainier time of year than late winter and early spring.

Planning an Outdoor Area in Gold Coast

At the time of writing, there are no water restrictions in effect in Gold Coast. It hasn’t always been like this; In 2007 stage 6 water restrictions were in effect, severely limiting when households could water their gardens. For this reason it can be worth considering plants that can don’t need to be watered every day when planning your garden. In the meantime, the Hinze Dam is close to 90% full, so feel free to think of a water feature, but plan for the prospect that one day you might not be able to run it.

Selecting the Right Outdoor Furniture for Gold Coast

With under a million people, Gold Coast backyards are generally a bit less cramped than other large cities on the east coast. This gives you a bit more scope to consider some of the larger lounge and dining sets that Sydney or Melbourne apartment dwellers simply cannot fit.

The Gold Coast is a sunny place, so be sure to select products that are built to withstand a reasonable amount of ultraviolet light. When purchasing polyethylene rattan or resin wicker, this means making sure you go for products that are produced with a reasonable amount of UV stabilizer. Without sufficient UV stabiliser, your furniture will simply fall apart in the sun. Unfortunately, you can’t really tell how much UV stabiliser. Here at Outdoor Living Direct we are very particular only to stock wicker furniture that’s UV stable enough to last a year under the Australian sun. This lifespan can be extended by covering or storing the furniture when it’s not in use. For more on how to choose the right kind of wicker furniture, check out our Wicker Furniture Buyer’s Guide.
